When using the various Block types for your website pages, and setting different blocks to appear on different types of devices, the photos that you add to those blocks may not exactly match the aspect ratio of the space provided. Because of this, rather than re-editing the composition/cropping of the photo, you can use the Focal Point tool to change how the photo is displayed within the available aspect ratio.
In the screenshot below, you can see that I've added a Featured Galleries Block to my website and the photo that I've selected doesn't quite fit the way I'd like it to. Let's adjust it so that our fluffy friend's head is not cropped off.
Adjusting The Focal Point
- In your Zenfolio account, go into the Website Editor, and navigate to the page that contains the Block you'd like to edit.
- Select the Block you would like to edit.
- On the left-hand side, in the Block options, scroll down to the Images or Media section. Click on the item you want to edit. Note: When using standard Image Blocks, the Focal Point tool can be accessed through the ellipsis next to the item.
- When you've selected the item to edit, you should see the the Focal Point option appear with the photo photo currently being used.
- If you've not selected a photo to use, or if you'd like to change the photo, you can do so with the Replace Photo button.
- Click and drag the Focal Point to a new location on the photo. For example, I want to make the top of the photo more visible, so I'm going to move the Focal Point UP towards the top.
As you make adjustments to the Focal Point location, you will see the preview on the right-hand side update automatically.
Portrait vs Landscape Photos
When you're adjusting the location of the focal point, it can be helpful to take your photo's orientation into consideration, within the space that it is being displayed.
- For Portrait or Vertical oriented photos, the photo's width will likely already be filling the space provided. Because of this, moving the Focal Point left or right may not have much of an effect. Try moving the Focal Point up and down to reveal more of the photo that was not able to be seen within the space.
- For Landscape or Horizontal oriented photos, how much you're able to change the Focal Point will ultimately depend on the Block type and the space where the photo is being displayed. In areas where the photo is displayed in a space that is wider than it is tall, moving the Focal Point left or right may not have much of an effect. In these cases, try moving it up or down.
However, in display spaces that are square or taller than they are wide, you will be able to move the Focal Point left or right with more of an effect on the photo.
Feel free to play around with the location of the Focal Point of the photo to determine the best location. Ultimately, how much the Focal Point will impact the photo will depend on the orientation of the photo and the orientation of the displayed space provided.
